Ireland

July 1996

There are no specifically bi organisations with a net.presence in Ireland, and the few that even exist[ed?] off the net are not widely known. There is little (although doubtless some) hostility to bisexuality among the gay/lesbian population, and a general public tolerance of Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender affairs -- the Cork GLB float won the St. Patrick's Day Parade the year Boston banned theirs :-) -- but bisexuality is still relatively unpublicised. The main publicity vehicle used would be Gay Community News (GCN), a newspaper published weekly in Dublin.

There is thus little or no organised nationwide bi activity, and few sufficiently out techno-bis available to run bi net services (the one small bi/pagan web server at 143.239.128.28 ran out of disk space).

Currently there are 3 or 4 Irish users on BISEXU-L and a similar number who post on soc.bi. A few are seen on IRC from time to time but not regularly. It may be that most bis simply don't have a PC/Mac at home, and even if they have access at work, may not use it if they are not out, or simply haven't discovered what's out there yet, or don't know how to use it.
